Information:
Mall Bay: Originally referred to as either Mal Bay or Maul Bay,
it is derived from the French word for ill or bad
• 1810, local folklore describes a Harry Fuher, who settles in Mall Bay and apparently saved the life of a shipwrecked sailor. To show his appreciation, the sailor gave Harry a map showing the location of a treasure buried in Mall Bay. Legend has it that the treasure is guarded by a headless spirit.
• 1836, the community appears in the first official census with a population of 53.
• Late 1800s, schooners from Mall Bay participate in the Labrador Fishery.
• 1904, first church in the area is built.
• 1912, a new school is constructed.
